Food waste is a major issue around the world, but by distributing goods that are still edible but about to expire, we could significantly improve the lives of many people in need.
In order to minimize food waste, the Élélmiszermentő Nonprofit Kft. was founded in 2022. Its goal is to redistribute products that are about to expire from, for instance, major grocery chains in such a way that most of them are consumed rather than thrown away. This process can also be organized at the level of catering establishments and stores in addition to the central approach.
If someone downloads the app Munch, they can learn about the leftover foods from nearby restaurants and buffets that day and can purchase them for a lower price. However, everyone has access to the shelves of the major stores with discounted goods, where you can purchase items at a discount that are still consumable but would be expired in 1-2 days.
We surveyed Pulzus users about their past purchases of over-the-counter goods with short expiration dates and discounted pricing. 40% of respondents have previously purchased from a shelf like this, but only 48% do so on a regular basis. 8% do not purchase such things, 2% do not typically shop, and 2% did not respond.
