A healthy binge-watching or an addiction? – A survey by Pulzus

Where are the times when we eagerly anticipated the Tuesday night movie installments or rushed home for the afternoon broadcast of the most recent Brazilian soap opera?

With the rise of streaming service providers, we now have nearly unlimited access to movies and TV shows that we can watch whenever we want, day or night, for just a few thousand forints a month. The fact that you can actually click on watching the series and get hooked on it is what unites them. But where is the line between addiction and healthy binge-watching?

When binge-watching a series becomes a compulsion over time, when we experience so-called withdrawal symptoms when we miss an episode, when we stop taking care of our daily responsibilities, when we even sacrifice our sleep or social engagements to watch a series, then we can already talk about addiction.

We questioned Pulzus users about times when a show’s premise absolutely captured their attention and came dangerously close to turning them into addicts.

49% of respondents said they watch series but don’t think they’re addicted to them. A whopping 31% acknowledged that they occasionally find themselves unable to quit watching the show. Only 1% of respondents chose not to comment on this subject, while 19% of respondents watch no series at all.
