The International Modern Pentathlon Union has announced that riding will no longer be part of pentathlon at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and that will be replaced by e-sports. The decision has caused an enormous international outcry among athletes and fans alike, as it overrides a tradition that has existed for 112 years.
Following the announcement, an international protest began, more than 650 pentathletes called on the resignation of union leaders.
The sport of modern pentathlon consists of shooting, swimming, fencing, running and horseback riding, and it has been included in the Olympic Games this way since 1912. Over the years, the programs got shorter and shorter, but the sports themselves never changed.
The executive committee of the International Union cited animal protection reasons for the decision, and the televised horse abuse broadcast during the Tokyo Olympics might have also played a role.
