The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has ruled on Sunday that transgender athletes are not allowed to participate in women’s disciplines in the World Championships. At the extraordinary congress held at Puskás Aréna (Budapest), this decision was made with the participation of 152 national swimming associations, with a majority of 71%.
The decision was made on a scientific basis, as the FINA research panel showed that transgender swimmers have a significant advantage over cisgender female swimmers. The specific rule states that only transgender people who have not yet passed Tanner Stage 2 of male puberty, when the production of male hormones begins, can participate in female sports categories.
In an interview with Mandiner on June 15, Krisztina Egerszegi, a five-time Hungarian Olympic swimming champion, also gave her opinion. According to Egerszegi, a separate category should be created for transgender athletes in future championships, thus ensuring that everyone can compete without discrimination.
