Every year, the official ranking of secondary schools across the country is revealed. The over-subscription rate for certain of Budapest’s “elite” high schools is significantly more significant because they consistently rank very highly in this list. For a child to attend a school that can offer a direct road to university admittance or to continue their education at a foreign university, requires a lot of preparation on the part of the students and some sacrifices on the part of the parents.
Unfortunately, education is also not immune to corruption. According to rumors, one of the high schools takes bribes to enroll students who do poorly on the written exam in exchange for a specific sum of money.
We carefully presented the question to Pulzus users: “Would you pay so your child can attend the chosen educational institution?”
In response to this question, 13% of respondents indicated that they would pay because they believe that in the society in which they live, the future of the child comes first. 41 percent would not pay, citing the possibility of future issues if admissions were lower than expected. A further 35% would not pay because they find this practice undesirable. For other reasons, 5% of respondents would not make a financial contribution, while 6% remained silent.
