The name of the scientific discipline studying kisses is philematology.
The researchers believe that kissing is probably a learned behavior, as it is common for many mammals. It is a less known fact, however, that kissing is not customary in every human culture. For example, in Eskimo and Maori cultures, noses are rubbed together instead of the lips.
According to anthropologists, kissing with the mouth is more characteristic of complex societies, while simple cultures might even consider it especially disgusting. From this scientists conclude that kissing is not a biological need, it is just a cultural habit. It may be considered a gender stereotype, but women attach more importance to kissing and require this kind of intimacy more than men.
