We take praise with joy and criticism with annoyance, although common sense would dictate the opposite. In the words of Carl Sagan: ‘Valid criticism does you a favor’. In fact, there are two types of people when it comes to receiving criticism.
One is able to accept any negative assessment in a positive way, for the other a purple haze descends upon hearing the criticism and the person bursts immediately.
When we hear kind words, we are happy. When we are criticized, some of us get discouraged. But think about it: if we were constantly receiving praise and false compliments, how could we improve?
Real criticism gives us clues how to really do something better. Real criticism is not personal. It highlights the specific elements of a particular task performed or of an action associated. If all this is done with the intention of improvement, with sensible empathy, then it is constructive.
