Nowadays, food waste can be considered a significant environmental problem worldwide, and undoubtedly in Hungary as well. During the holidays, the wastage of edibles only grows further; in Hungary, we often prepare more food than we can consume. That is why a lot of food frequently ends up not in our stomachs but the trash.
In Hungary, a total of 1.8 million tons of food is thrown away each year, which means 68 kg of food per capita and an average of 270 kilograms per family.
According to UN statistics, nearly a third of all food produced worldwide is wasted.
By 2030, this problem could worsen, as food waste generated annually could increase by as much as a third.
For one of the most significant problems in the world, food wastage, more conscious consumption may be the solution.
Households are responsible for about 40 per cent of food waste. In our research, we asked our users if they usually throw away food.
Unfortunately, 51% of respondents tend to throw away food.
