The European Union is preparing a new directive to ensure a uniform standard of living for workers in the member states. The interim agreement was reached on Tuesday by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament, and it will bring forward the establishment of a uniform EU minimum wage policy.
According to the draft, member states will have to re-evaluate their existing minimum wage regulations and, if social and economic conditions reveal that they cannot ensure an adequate standard of living for their workers, they will have to draw up a plan to improve the situation. Exceptions to this rule are member states where the minimum wage of more than 80% of workers is protected by collective agreements.
According to a statement by Istvan Ujhelyi, a member of the European Parliament, the legislation could be approved at the earliest during the autumn of this year.
Presently, there is a wide variation in minimum wages across the EU. The highest minimum wage exists in Luxembourg (EUR 2,257) and the lowest in Bulgaria (EUR 332), according to Eurostat data as of 1 January 2022. The Hungarian minimum wage amounts to the equivalent of EUR 552. Although it has increased a lot during the past years, it still ranks as the fourth lowest in the EU, lagging behind the figures of all Visegrad-countries.
