Would raising the pension limit “solve” the teacher shortage? – A survey by Pulzus

This academic year has a severe teacher shortage in public schools —nearly 12,000 teachers are missing. Due to low wages, teachers are absent in kindergartens, primary schools, and high schools. Many schools have not yet created their timetables or even the division of subjects for the upcoming semester.

There are 1,200 job listings for teachers alone on the public sector job portal, but they are also looking for instructors and kindergarten teachers. The actual teacher shortage, however, might be considerably worse than this. The Teachers’ Union estimates that there may be 15,500 teachers missing from the system. The biggest problem is in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, right after Budapest and Pest County.

The lifting of the pension cap, in the words of Minister Gergely Gulyás, is “the solution” to the teacher shortage. We conducted research among Pulzus users to see whether they thought raising the retirement age would help the teacher shortage.

71% of those polled said that this is most definitely not a way to address the teacher shortage.
